description Prehnite Overview
Prehnite is an orthorhombic calcium aluminosilicate mineral with the formula Ca2Al2Si3O10(OH)2. It was described in 1788 from the Karoo dolerites near Cradock in South Africa and named for Hendrik von Prehn, a Dutch colonial officer credited with bringing specimens to Europe. Pale green material is used as a gemstone, and gem-quality deposits are known around Wave Hill in Australia's Northern Territory. [Mindat mineral data](https://www.mindat.org/min-3277.html)
