James Ramsay MacDonald was a British Labour politician who served as Prime Minister of the United Kingdom in 1924 and again from 1929 to 1935. He was the first Labour politician to hold the office and led the first Labour government, initially as the head of a minority administration. His second premiership covered the onset of the Great Depression and the formation of a national government in 1931. MacDonald also served as leader of the parliamentary Labour Party.
