Red-headed Flameback

The Red-headed Flameback is a species of woodpecker recognized by the entirely crimson plumage covering its head and neck in both sexes. It features striking golden-yellow wings and back feathers, which is typical of the flameback genus. This vibrant coloration makes it a visually striking bird in its native habitat.

This specific bird is strictly endemic to the Philippine archipelago. It specifically inhabits tropical lowland and montane forests across various islands in the Philippines. It relies on mature, dense forests for nesting and foraging.

Unlike many woodpecker species where males and females have different head patterns, both sexes of the Red-headed Flameback share the exact same entirely crimson head. However, females can sometimes be distinguished by subtle differences in facial markings or size. Their identical head coloration is a key identifying trait of the species.

As a member of the Picidae family, the Red-headed Flameback primarily feeds on insects, beetle larvae, and ants. It uses its strong, chisel-like beak to hammer into tree bark and wood to extract its prey. It also occasionally supplements its diet with fruits and seeds found in the forest canopy.
