description River City Overview
River City was an educational multi-user virtual environment developed at Harvard Graduate School of Education in the early 2000s with support from the National Science Foundation. Designed for middle-grades science students, it placed small research teams in a historically grounded nineteenth-century town experiencing illness and environmental problems. Students collected clues, formed and tested hypotheses, ran controlled investigations, and used a lab notebook and digital artifacts to recommend explanations and responses. The project is now maintained as an archive rather than an active classroom service.
