Robert Kegan

Robert Kegan's constructive-developmental theory describes psychological growth as progressing through distinct orders of consciousness, in which individuals change how they organize meaning. His framework identifies how people shift in what they are "subject to" versus what they can hold as "object" of reflection.

Kegan's major books include "The Evolving Self" (1982), "In Over Our Heads" (1994), and "Immunity to Change" (2009, co-authored with Lisa Lahey). "Immunity to Change" presents a practical method for identifying hidden assumptions that block personal and organizational change.

In Kegan's framework, what a person is "subject to" at one stage—such as their own needs, relationships, or ideology—cannot be examined directly. Development occurs when that embedded experience becomes something one can hold as "object," allowing for reflection and greater psychological complexity.

Kegan's work, especially through the "Immunity to Change" method developed with Lisa Lahey, has been widely applied in executive coaching and organizational consulting. His framework helps coaches understand that adults operate from different meaning-making systems, which affects how they interpret challenges and lead others.
