Scott's contributions significantly advanced the study of classical philology and language.

help Robert Scott FAQ

What does LSJ mean in Ancient Greek studies?

LSJ stands for Liddell-Scott-Jones, the customary short name for A Greek-English Lexicon. Robert Scott and Henry George Liddell produced the original 1843 edition, while Henry Stuart Jones led the major later revision.

Was Liddell and Scott based on an earlier dictionary?

Yes. Its starting point was Franz Passow's German Handwörterbuch der griechischen Sprache, although Liddell and Scott added so much material that they eventually described their lexicon as a new work.

Why are there books called Little Liddell and Middle Liddell?

Those informal names distinguish abridged editions from the full lexicon, sometimes called Big Liddell or Great Scott. The smaller versions were designed for students who did not need the full historical and textual detail.

What did Robert Scott do besides edit the Greek lexicon?

Scott was an Oxford classical scholar and clergyman who served as Master of Balliol College from 1854 to 1870. He then became Dean of Rochester, holding that position until his death in 1887.
