Ronald Langacker

Ronald W. Langacker developed the theory of Cognitive Grammar, which posits that language is entirely symbolic and grounded in human cognition. His framework was comprehensively introduced in his two-volume work, 'Foundations of Cognitive Grammar.' This theory argues that grammar itself is meaningful and inherently tied to conceptualization.

Langacker's foundational concepts are laid out in his two-volume work, 'Foundations of Cognitive Grammar,' published in 1987 and 1991. Volume I covers theoretical prerequisites, while Volume II details descriptive applications. Another accessible text is 'Concept, Image, and Symbol,' which explores the cognitive basis of grammar.

Langacker argues against the traditional view that grammar is merely a set of arbitrary, meaningless rules. Instead, Cognitive Grammar posits that all grammatical structures have semantic content and are derived from human bodily experience. He believes that lexicon and grammar form a continuum of symbolic structures.

Langacker spent the majority of his distinguished career at the University of California, San Diego (UCSD). He was a foundational figure in establishing the university's highly regarded linguistics department. His work at UCSD helped train a generation of linguists in cognitive and functional approaches to language.
