Screen Two

Screen Two was a British television drama anthology series broadcast on BBC Two from 1985 to 1998. The strand focused on producing single, feature-length television films rather than serialized episodes. It served as a significant platform for both established and emerging British filmmaking talent.

Both were anthology strands run by the BBC, but they were broadcast on different channels and had slightly different scopes. Screen One aired on the flagship BBC One channel, while Screen Two aired on the more niche BBC Two. Screen Two was often known for allowing directors slightly more artistic and experimental freedom.

The strand produced many acclaimed feature-length dramas, including the 1985 film "My Left Foot," which was later adapted into an Oscar-winning theatrical movie. It also featured early works from directors like Mike Leigh and Stephen Frears. It acted as a high-budget bridge between television and cinema.

The BBC phased out the Screen One and Screen Two strands in the late 1990s as the landscape of British television production shifted. The network moved toward different movie and drama commissioning structures under changing controllers. The program effectively came to an end in 1998 after over a decade of prestigious broadcasts.
