Sergeant Stubby

Sergeant Stubby served as the mascot of the 102nd Infantry Regiment, part of the 26th 'Yankee' Division, during World War I. He accompanied the regiment to France and participated in multiple campaigns on the Western Front, including the Champagne-Marne, Aisne-Marne, and St. Mihiel operations.

Stubby is credited with alerting soldiers to incoming gas attacks, locating wounded soldiers in No Man's Land by listening for English voices, and reportedly capturing a German spy by biting and holding him until American soldiers arrived. He participated in 17 battles and is recognized as the most decorated war dog of World War I.

Stubby's taxidermied remains are displayed at the Smithsonian National Museum of American History in Washington, D.C. He is also commemorated with a brick at the National World War I Museum and Memorial in Kansas City, Missouri, and was the subject of an animated feature film, 'Sgt. Stubby: An American Hero,' released in 2018.

According to popular accounts, Stubby was given the rank of sergeant after he allegedly captured a German spy single-handedly, though the details of this story have been debated by historians. Regardless of the specific circumstances, he was formally recognized by the military and received numerous medals and commendations during and after his service.
