description Sextans Overview
Sextans is a faint equatorial constellation representing the sextant, introduced by Polish astronomer Johannes Hevelius in 1687 to commemorate the astronomical instrument he used for measuring star positions at Danzig. It lies south of Leo and contains no bright stars; its brightest, Alpha Sextantis, is only about fourth magnitude, making the constellation difficult to see without dark skies. Because the ecliptic crosses it, the Moon and planets can pass through Sextans, which also contains the lenticular Spindle Galaxy (NGC 3115).
