Shadows House

In the world of Shadows House, a Living Doll acts as both a servant and a literal reflection for their Shadow master. Because the Shadows lack distinct facial features, the Dolls wear expressions on their behalf and help them navigate the social complexities of the manor. Over time, the Doll and Shadow form a deep, symbiotic bond, with the Doll eventually learning to clean up the dangerous soot their master emits.

The Debut is a highly anticipated, specialized coming-of-age ceremony that a Shadow child must pass when they come of age. It serves as their formal introduction to the noble society of the Shadows House, overseen by the adult Shadows and Lord Grandfather. During this event, the Shadow and their Living Doll must work together to solve puzzles and prove their worth to the family.

Emilico is a cheerful, newly assigned Living Doll, and Kate is her Shadow master who resides deep within the mountains manor. Unlike many of the aristocratic Shadows, Kate is highly intelligent, kind, and keenly aware of the dark secrets hiding within the estate. The series primarily follows their partnership as they try to survive the oppressive rules of the Shadows family.

For the most part, the anime adaptation by Studio CloverWorks closely follows the manga's gothic mystery elements, though the first season rearranged some early timeline events. The anime excels at capturing the eerie, Victorian-esque atmosphere and the detailed animation of the soot emissions. However, the manga provides deeper insights into the political intrigue among the adult Shadows.
