Skanderbeg is the historical nickname of George Kastrioti (Gjergj Kastrioti, c. 1405–1468), an Albanian nobleman who led resistance against the Ottoman Empire in the 15th century. Raised as a hostage at the Ottoman court, he served the sultan before defecting in 1443 to his native stronghold of Krujë, where he united Albanian clans. From 1443 until his death in 1468 his forces repeatedly defeated larger Ottoman armies.
He is widely regarded as Albania's national hero, and his revolt delayed full Ottoman control of Albanian lands for more than two decades.
