Small emerald

description Small emerald Overview

The small emerald, Hemistola chrysoprasaria, is a geometrid moth found in Europe and parts of western Asia. Adults have pale green wings crossed by fine whitish lines, although the green coloration commonly fades after death or with age. Its caterpillars feed chiefly on traveller's joy, Clematis vitalba, and the species is consequently associated with hedgerows, scrub, woodland margins, and other places where that climbing plant grows.
