The smooth newt (Lissotriton vulgaris) is a small amphibian and the most widely distributed newt in Europe, with a range extending from Ireland and Britain through continental Europe into western Siberia and Central Asia. Adults reach roughly 8–11 cm in length. During the spring breeding season, males develop a continuous wavy dorsal crest and more vivid coloration. After breeding in ponds and still water, adults return to a largely terrestrial lifestyle.
