Str8ts is a logic-based number puzzle invented by Jeff Widderich and popularized by fellow puzzle designer Andrew Stuart. Solvers are presented with a grid containing both white and black cells, where the black cells act as blockers similar to those in a crossword puzzle. The objective is to fill the white cells with digits from 1 to 9 so that no digit repeats in any row or column. Additionally, contiguous white cells within a row or column must form a "straight," meaning they must contain a set of consecutive numbers arranged in any order.

What is a straight in Str8ts?

A straight is an uninterrupted run of consecutive numbers placed within a horizontal or vertical group of white cells. The digits may appear in any order, so a three-cell compartment containing 2, 4, and 3 is valid.

How do the black cells work in Str8ts?

Black cells divide rows and columns into separate compartments, much like blocks in a crossword. Some contain clue numbers that cannot be repeated in the same row or column, while unnumbered black cells simply act as barriers.

Can a number repeat in a Str8ts row if it is in a different compartment?

No. As in Sudoku, each digit may appear only once in any complete row or column, regardless of how black cells split that line into compartments.

How is Str8ts different from Sudoku?

Sudoku requires each outlined box, row, and column to contain a full set of digits. Str8ts replaces the boxes with variable-length white compartments that must form consecutive runs, while row and column uniqueness still applies.
