description Submillimeter Array Overview

The Submillimeter Array is a radio interferometer located near the summit of Mauna Kea on the island of Hawaii. It consists of eight movable antennas, each six meters in diameter, whose signals are combined to achieve higher angular resolution than a single antenna of comparable size. Operating at submillimeter wavelengths, it is used by astronomers to study cold dust and molecular gas in star-forming regions, circumstellar disks, nearby galaxies, and other objects that emit strongly in this part of the spectrum.
