The Magic Lamp

This popular British pantomime is a theatrical adaptation of the classic Aladdin folktale. The original story originates from the famous Arabic compilation, "One Thousand and One Nights" (often known as the Arabian Nights).

The production typically features hallmark characters of British panto, including the principal boy (Aladdin) and the pantomime dame (often Aladdin's mother, Widow Twankey). It relies heavily on slapstick comedy, cross-dressing, and interactive audience participation.

The villain is almost always Abanazar, an evil sorcerer who tricks Aladdin into retrieving the magic lamp from the dangerous Cave of Wonders. He serves as the classic antagonist for the audience to boo and hiss at during the performance.

The shows incorporate interactive routines like the "He's behind you" segments and the "Ghost Track," where characters pop up from behind objects. It also features an elaborate transformation scene where Aladdin's cave turns into a glittering palace.
