description The Nore Overview
The Nore is a sandbank and historic anchorage in the narrowing Thames Estuary, off the coast of southeast England. Its position made it a naval gathering place on the route to London, and it became associated with the Nore Mutiny of 1797, when sailors in the fleet challenged naval authority and attempted to blockade the Thames. The name therefore refers both to a physical feature and to an important episode in British naval history.
