The Pathfinder is a historical adventure novel by James Fenimore Cooper, published in 1840. It is the fourth novel in Cooper's Leatherstocking Tales and returns to Natty Bumppo, also called the Pathfinder, as a central frontier character. Set during the French and Indian War, the story follows military and wilderness action in the North American borderlands and examines scouting, loyalty, conflict, and survival. It is suited to readers of nineteenth-century American literature and historical frontier fiction.
