Thomas Bopp was an American amateur astronomer who independently co-discovered Comet Hale-Bopp in 1995 while observing from Arizona. The comet was also independently discovered by professional astronomer Alan Hale, and it was subsequently designated C/1995 O1. Bopp's discovery made him part of the public story of one of the most widely observed comets of the late twentieth century, despite his status as a non-professional astronomer.
