Thomas Luckmann

Thomas Luckmann is best known for co-authoring the groundbreaking 1966 book 'The Social Construction of Reality' with Peter L. Berger. This work established social constructionism as a major sociological perspective, arguing that knowledge and reality are created through human social interaction.

He was a German-Slovenian sociologist who lived from 1927 to 2016. He spent much of his highly influential academic career in Europe, notably serving as a professor at the University of Konstanz in Germany.

The book posited that reality is socially constructed through everyday, face-to-face interactions that eventually become habitualized and institutionalized over time. It successfully bridged the gap between micro-sociology and macro-sociology by showing how individual actions build massive societal structures.

While primarily a sociologist, he made significant contributions to the academic study of religion. He wrote 'The Invisible Religion' in 1967, which argued that modern religion had shifted away from institutional churches into personal, private spheres.
