description Venus Express Overview

Venus Express was a European Space Agency spacecraft launched in 2005 and placed into orbit around Venus in 2006. As ESA's first mission to the planet, it studied the atmosphere, clouds, surface environment, and interaction between the solar wind and Venusian plasma. Its observations were used by planetary scientists investigating atmospheric circulation, climate evolution, and the loss of water from Venus.

help Venus Express FAQ

Which space agency launched the Venus Express mission?

Venus Express was a spacecraft launched by the European Space Agency (ESA) in 2005 from the Baikonur Cosmodrome. It successfully entered orbit around Venus in 2006.

What scientific observations did the Venus Express spacecraft conduct?

As ESA's first mission to the planet, it extensively studied the Venusian atmosphere, dense cloud cover, and surface environment. The orbiter also measured the complex interaction between the solar wind and the planet's plasma.

How did the Venus Express mission end?

The spacecraft far exceeded its planned operational lifespan, continuing to transmit scientific data until late 2014. The mission officially concluded when the probe ran out of propellant and burned up in the Venusian atmosphere in early 2015.

Was the Venus Express spacecraft built from scratch?

No, to save money and development time, ESA constructed Venus Express by heavily reusing the design and spare parts from the Mars Express orbiter. The primary scientific instruments were also closely adapted from previous ESA missions like Mars Express and the Rosetta comet probe.
