Wasp Beetle

description Wasp Beetle Overview

The Wasp Beetle, scientifically known as Rutpela maculata, is a species of longhorn beetle belonging to the family Cerambycidae. It is widespread across Europe and parts of Asia, commonly found in woodlands, hedgerows, and gardens where their larvae develop inside decaying timber. The insect is distinguished by its striking black and yellow banding, an evolutionary Batesian mimicry of stinging wasps that helps deter predators. Adult wasp beetles are diurnal, feeding primarily on pollen and nectar from flowers such as hawthorn and umbellifers during the summer months.
