Zwin

The Zwin is a unique tidal saltmarsh nature reserve located right on the border between Belgium and the Netherlands. It is situated near the coastal town of Knokke-Heist in Belgium and Sluis in the Netherlands. The park has separate entrance gates depending on which country you are visiting from.

In the Middle Ages, the Zwin was a vital tidal channel that connected the North Sea to the wealthy merchant city of Bruges. The waterway allowed large trading ships to dock, making Bruges one of the most important economic hubs in Europe. However, the inlet slowly silted up over the centuries, shifting trade elsewhere.

Because it represents one of Europe’s last remaining natural tidal inlets, the Zwin is a critical habitat for diverse plant and animal life. It serves as a crucial breeding ground for avocets, storks, and terns. The dynamic saltmarsh environment also supports specialized halophytic (salt-tolerant) plants.

Yes, visitors can walk through the protected reserve and physically cross the border between Belgium and the Netherlands on foot. The trails traverse dikes and mudflats, offering distinct views of the different management styles on either side of the border. However, you must purchase a ticket at the main visitor center to access the inner trail network.
