Gameunsa Site Three-Story Pagodas

These twin granite pagodas were constructed at the site of Gameunsa Temple to enshrine the ashes of King Munmu. They were commissioned by his son, King Sinmun, in 682 during the Unified Silla period. The structures served as a monumental tribute to King Munmu, who is famous for unifying the Korean peninsula.

There are two identical three-story granite pagodas standing at the Gameunsa site. Unlike many temple sites that feature a single main pagoda, Gameunsa features these twin structures symmetrically flanking the original temple axis. They were built with precise geometric proportions that showcase the refined stonemasonry of the Unified Silla period.

The pagodas are located in Gyeongju, South Korea, which was the historic capital of the ancient Silla Kingdom. They are situated near the coast of the East Sea, relatively close to the underwater tomb of King Munmu. The site forms an important part of the historic monuments scattered throughout the Gyeongju area.

The pagodas were constructed entirely out of granite, the premier building material used for monumental Korean architecture during the Unified Silla period. The massive stones were precisely cut and fitted together without the use of mortar, relying purely on their weight and interlocking shapes. This robust material gave the structures the durability needed to survive since the 7th century.
