description Aucuba japonica (Japanese Aucuba) Overview
Aucuba japonica, or Japanese aucuba, is a broadleaf evergreen shrub native to Japan and other parts of East Asia. It has glossy, leathery leaves, and many cultivated forms carry yellow spots or margins; small purplish flowers are followed by red berries on female plants when a compatible male plant is nearby. Its tolerance of deep shade makes it useful for sheltered foundation plantings, woodland borders, and shaded courtyards.
