King Stephen of England

description King Stephen of England Overview

King Stephen of England, also known as Stephen of Blois, ruled from 1135 until his death in 1154 and belonged to the House of Blois. His accession followed the death of Henry I and was challenged by Henry's daughter, Empress Matilda, whose claim had previously been acknowledged by the barons. The resulting civil war, fought mainly in England and Normandy and later called the Anarchy, ended with Stephen recognizing Matilda's son Henry as his heir; Henry became King Henry II in 1154.
