Genomic research published in 2021 found that dire wolves belonged to a deeply distinct canid lineage. Despite their wolf-like build, they were not simply oversized gray wolves of the genus Canis.

Predators were attracted to struggling animals trapped in the asphalt seeps and then became trapped themselves. The La Brea Tar Pits consequently preserve thousands of dire wolf remains.
