Albrecht Dürer - Christ and the Disciples at Emmaus

The woodcut is part of Dürer's Small Passion, a series of 37 woodcuts depicting scenes from the life and Passion of Christ. The complete series was published in 1511 in book form with Latin text, making it one of Dürer's most widely circulated devotional works.

It depicts the episode from the Gospel of Luke in which the resurrected Christ reveals himself to two disciples during a meal at Emmaus. Dürer captures the moment of recognition, with Christ seated at the table rendered in his characteristic fine linework.

Each Small Passion image measures approximately 13 by 10 centimeters, making the series notably compact compared to Dürer's larger standalone woodcuts and engravings. The small format was designed for personal devotional use and affordable distribution.

Original impressions of the Small Passion woodcuts, including Christ and the Disciples at Emmaus, are held in major print collections such as the British Museum in London and the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York.
