Boro Sona Mosque

The Boro Sona Masjid, also known as the Bara Sona Masjid or Large Gold Mosque, is located in the historical city of Gaur in Bangladesh. It was built during the Bengal Sultanate era in the late 15th or early 16th century. It is recognized as one of the largest mosques from that period in the region.

The mosque earned its name because its domes and walls were reportedly once adorned with gilded tiles or gold accents during the height of the Bengal Sultanate. While the gold is no longer present, the sheer scale of the structure reflects the immense wealth of the era. Visitors today can still see the massive architectural footprint it left behind.

The mosque was commissioned by Sultan Hussain Shah, one of the most prominent rulers of the Bengal Sultanate. He ruled from 1493 to 1519, which aligns with the late 15th or early 16th-century dating of the structure. The mosque stands as a testament to his architectural patronage.

The structure originally featured eleven domes, an unusual and grand layout for the period, supported by thick stone pillars. The interior and exterior were heavily ornamented with intricate terracotta and stone carvings. The arches and doorways display a distinct blend of Islamic and regional Bengali architectural styles.
