Blind Prickly Pear (Opuntia rufida)

description Blind Prickly Pear (Opuntia rufida) Overview

Blind prickly pear, Opuntia rufida, is a pad-forming cactus native to parts of southern Texas and northern Mexico, including the Big Bend region and adjacent Coahuila. Its green pads have few or no conspicuous long spines but carry dense reddish or cinnamon-colored glochids, the small barbed bristles characteristic of many prickly pears. These glochids detach readily and can irritate skin and eyes, so the plant requires caution in cultivation.
