Maria Cunitz

description Maria Cunitz Overview

Maria Margaretha Cunitz (1610–1664) was a Silesian astronomer whose 1650 work Urania Propitia simplified the tables of planetary motion that Johannes Kepler had published in the Rudolphine Tables. By reducing the computational complexity of Kepler's methods, her book made ephemerides more accessible to working astronomers of the seventeenth century. She was sometimes called the "Second Urania" by contemporaries. Her career is documented in correspondence with leading scholars of her era.

help Maria Cunitz FAQ

What is Maria Cunitz's Urania Propitia?

Urania Propitia is Maria Cunitz's 1650 book of astronomical tables. It reorganized and simplified the planetary calculations published by Johannes Kepler in the Rudolphine Tables. [MacTutor biography](https://mathshistory.st-andrews.ac.uk/Biographies/Cunitz/)

How did Maria Cunitz improve Kepler's planetary tables?

Cunitz made Keplerian calculations easier to use and corrected some errors in the Rudolphine Tables. Her contribution was a clearer computational method, not a rejection of Kepler's underlying astronomical work. [MacTutor biography](https://mathshistory.st-andrews.ac.uk/Biographies/Cunitz/)

Was Urania Propitia published in German as well as Latin?

Yes. The work appeared in both Latin and German, making advanced planetary tables more accessible to readers who did not work exclusively in Latin. It was published in 1650 in Silesia. Did Maria Cunitz invent a completely new planetary model?

No. Her 1650 Urania Propitia worked within Keplerian astronomy and focused on making its calculations more practical and less cumbersome. That made her an important mathematical astronomer even though the book was not a new replacement for Kepler's model.
