She became president after Joseph Estrada left office during the political crisis known as the Second EDSA Revolution, and she later won the 2004 presidential election. Arroyo is the daughter of Diosdado Macapagal, who was president of the Philippines from 1961 to 1965. Her career also included service as vice president and as a member of the House of Representatives.
