description Sultan Mehmed VI Overview
Mehmed VI was the last sultan of the Ottoman Empire and reigned from 1918 to 1922. His rule followed the Ottoman defeat in the First World War and took place amid Allied occupation, nationalist resistance, and the creation of the Turkish national government in Ankara. The Turkish Grand National Assembly abolished the sultanate on 1 November 1922, ending his reign. Mehmed VI subsequently lived in exile.
