Sala delle Prospettive (Baldassare Peruzzi, Villa Farnesina)

The Sala delle Prospettive is a famous reception room located inside the Villa Farnesina in Rome. The villa was originally built in the early 16th century for the wealthy Sienese banker Agostino Chigi.

The room was decorated around 1516 to 1517 by the Italian architect and painter Baldassare Peruzzi, along with his workshop. Peruzzi designed the frescoes to flawlessly match the room's physical architecture.

The room is famous for its incredible use of trompe-l'oeil architecture, a technique that uses optical illusions to trick the eye. Peruzzi painted columns, loggias, and open pavilions on the flat walls to make the room appear as if it opens onto expansive, distant landscapes.

Beyond the painted illusionistic architecture, the frescoes reveal panoramic views of the city of Rome and the idyllic Italian countryside. The skyline was painted to mimic the actual view that would have been visible from the villa's windows in the 1500s.
