The Great Mosque of Sfax is a historic congregational mosque in the medina of Sfax, Tunisia. Its foundation is generally dated to about 849, during the Aghlabid period, although the building was substantially altered under later Zirid and Ottoman rule. The complex includes a hypostyle prayer hall, a small rectangular courtyard, a mihrab, and a minaret whose present form incorporates later construction. Its inscriptions and decorative program document the layered development of early Islamic architecture in Ifriqiya.
