Russula emetica, the sickener, is an ectomycorrhizal mushroom associated mainly with coniferous woodland. It has a vivid red to scarlet cap, white gills and stem, and a white spore print, although color and form can vary with age and weather. It occurs widely across the Northern Hemisphere, and eating it raw or undercooked can cause nausea, vomiting, and other gastrointestinal symptoms.
