Silleuksa Pagoda

The Silleuksa Pagoda is located at the Silleuksa temple complex in Yeoju, Gyeonggi Province, South Korea. The temple sits along the banks of the Namhan River and is a designated cultural heritage site.

The Silleuksa Pagoda is distinct within the Korean Buddhist architectural tradition because it is constructed entirely of brick, diverging sharply from the dominant Korean tradition of stone or wooden pagoda construction. This brick method reflects influences from continental Asian Buddhist architecture that are very rare in Korea.

The exact construction date of the Silleuksa brick pagoda is debated among scholars, but it is generally attributed to the Goryeo Dynasty period (918–1392). Some estimates place its construction around the late 13th or 14th century, though the temple complex itself has origins tracing back to the Silla period.

The Silleuksa Pagoda is a historic reliquary monument and is not open for visitors to enter. Visitors to the Silleuksa temple grounds can view and walk around the exterior of the pagoda, which remains one of the most photographed structures at the site.
