description 48 Doris Overview
48 Doris is a carbonaceous, C-type asteroid in the outer part of the main asteroid belt. Hermann Goldschmidt discovered it in Paris on 19 September 1857, and the object was named for Doris, a sea goddess in Greek mythology. It completes one rotation in about 11.9 hours and has a diameter estimated at roughly 220 kilometers, although physical values depend on the observation set and model used. It is studied as a large, dark main-belt body rather than an Earth-approaching asteroid.
