description Aranea Overview
Aranea was an obsolete constellation proposed by the English naturalist John Hill in his 1754 astronomical work Urania. Hill drew it as a long-legged spider and placed it among a group of new animal figures that he added to historical sky charts. Like Hirudo, the Leech, and Limax, Aranea was not adopted into the standardized system later recognized by the International Astronomical Union.
