The Aras River, also known as the Araxes, is a transboundary river approximately 1,072 kilometers long that flows through the South Caucasus and northwestern Iran. It forms sections of the international borders between Turkey and Armenia, between the Nakhchivan exclave of Azerbaijan and Iran, and between mainland Azerbaijan and Iran. Rising in eastern Turkey, the river flows generally eastward before joining the Kura River in the Kura-Aras lowland of Azerbaijan, with both rivers ultimately draining into the Caspian Sea. The Aras and Kura together constitute the principal river system of the South Caucasus region.
