description Caelum Overview

Caelum is a small, faint constellation in the southern celestial hemisphere, representing an engraver's chisel or burin. French astronomer Nicolas-Louis de Lacaille introduced it in the 1750s while mapping the southern sky, and the International Astronomical Union later retained it among the 88 modern constellations. Its brightest star, Alpha Caeli, is about magnitude 4.45, so the constellation has no first-magnitude stars and is difficult to recognize as a strong naked-eye pattern.
