Chang'e 1 was the inaugural lunar orbiter of the Chinese Lunar Exploration Program, launched by the China National Space Administration in October 2007. The spacecraft was tasked with creating a comprehensive three-dimensional map of the lunar surface and analyzing the distribution of various elements and materials. It successfully fulfilled its primary objectives before being intentionally crashed into the Moon in 2009. This mission established the technological foundation for China's subsequent robotic lunar exploration efforts, including landers and sample return vehicles.
