Common Chickweed

description Common Chickweed Overview

Stellaria media, known as common chickweed, is a small annual or biennial herb in the carnation family, Caryophyllaceae. Native to temperate Eurasia, North Africa, and northeastern tropical Africa, it is now widespread in temperate regions and commonly grows in cultivated ground, gardens, lawns, and other disturbed sites. The low, sprawling plant has opposite leaves and small white, deeply divided petals; it is treated as a weed but is also used as a leafy food and as feed for poultry and other animals.
