Common Tansy

description Common Tansy Overview

Tanacetum vulgare, or common tansy, is an aromatic perennial herb in the aster family, Asteraceae, native to Europe and parts of Asia. It has finely divided foliage and flat-topped clusters of button-like yellow flower heads, and it has been introduced to many regions outside its native range, including North America. Historical uses included medicinal preparations and household insect deterrence, but the plant can form dense stands that compete with native vegetation, and its thujone-containing oil can irritate skin.
