Diamondback

The Diamondback is a classic, spirit-forward cocktail made from equal parts rye whiskey, applejack (apple brandy), and Yellow Chartreuse. It is traditionally stirred with ice rather than shaken to maintain a silky texture and served without additional sweeteners or juices. The drink originates from the Diamondback Lounge in the Lord Baltimore Hotel.

The drink lacks any non-alcoholic mixers, relying entirely on the interplay of three high-proof spirits. Both the rye whiskey and applejack typically sit at 80 to 100 proof, while Yellow Chartreuse is 40% alcohol by volume. Stirring it with ice provides slight dilution, but it remains a notoriously potent sipper.

Yellow Chartreuse is a herbal, sweet French liqueur made by Carthusian monks, bringing notes of honey, saffron, and complex spices to the drink. In the Diamondback, it tempers the high-proof bite of the rye whiskey and the fruity richness of the applejack. The result is a layered, warming beverage with an earthy, fruity profile.

While both are stirred, spirit-forward cocktails featuring rye whiskey, the Diamondback uses applejack and Yellow Chartreuse instead of sweet vermouth and bitters. This makes the Diamondback significantly more herbal and fruit-forward, with a heavier, more syrupy mouthfeel. The Manhattan is lighter and more aromatic, while the Diamondback is famously intense.
