description Dougga Overview

Dougga, ancient Thugga, is an extensive archaeological site in northern Tunisia containing the remarkably preserved ruins of a Roman-Berber city. The settlement evolved from an original Numidian center, which is evidenced by the prominent second-century BC Libyco-Punic mausoleum located nearby. Under Roman rule, the city acquired significant public monuments, including a large theater built in 168 CE and a monumental Capitol temple dedicated to Jupiter, Juno, and Minerva. Recognized for its historical layers and state of preservation, Dougga was designated a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1997.
