The Essequibo River is a major waterway flowing northward through Guyana to the Atlantic Ocean. It runs for approximately 1,010 kilometers and drains more than half of the country's territory, making it Guyana's longest river. Its mouth at the Atlantic coast is nearly 30 kilometers wide and contains several large islands. The river features numerous rapids and waterfalls along its course, limiting continuous navigation to its lower reaches.
