Extra 300L

The Extra 300L was designed by renowned German aerobatic pilot and aeronautical engineer Walter Extra. He introduced the aircraft in the 1990s specifically to dominate the world of unlimited aerobatic competition. His designs are universally praised for their precise handling characteristics and immense structural strength.

The most significant visual difference is that the Extra 300L features a low-mounted wing configuration, whereas other models like the 300S feature mid-mounted wings. The Extra 300L is also specifically certified as a two-seat aircraft, making it highly popular for advanced flight training. This low-wing design greatly improves visibility for the pilot during complex maneuvers.

The Extra 300L is engineered specifically for unlimited aerobatic competition, meaning its airframe is incredibly rigid and capable of withstanding extreme stress. It is typically rated to handle positive G-forces of plus 10 Gs and negative G-forces of minus 10 Gs. This massive structural tolerance allows pilots to perform violent, high-speed maneuvers without risking the airframe.

To achieve the massive power-to-weight ratio required for vertical climbs, the Extra 300L is typically equipped with a highly modified Lycoming AEIO-540 piston engine. This fuel-injected, six-cylinder engine produces roughly 300 horsepower. This immense power allows the lightweight aircraft to hang completely motionless on its propeller.
