Godfrey Lienhardt

Godfrey Lienhardt is best known for his 1961 ethnographic study, "Divinity and Experience: The Religion of the Dinka." This book remains a foundational text in the study of African religions and social anthropology.

Lienhardt conducted his extensive and pioneering fieldwork in southern Sudan, primarily living among the Dinka people. His research provided deep insights into the religious practices, social structures, and daily lives of this Nilotic ethnic group.

He was a prominent British social anthropologist closely associated with the University of Oxford. He spent much of his academic career there, teaching and influencing generations of future anthropologists.

In the book, Lienhardt argues that the Dinka's religious experiences and their concepts of "Divinity" are deeply intertwined with their physical and social environment. He famously explored how the Dinka language and cosmology shaped their understanding of human action and cosmic forces.
